I was born and educated in Leicestershire, towards the western limits of the M&GN. I read history at Oxford and my ensuing career was in the world of education. I retired from full time employment as a college principal/CEO in 2012, and since then I have worked part time as an educational consultant, supporting school improvement, a role which sees me travelling a great deal - by rail wherever possible. I have over 25 years’ experience as an exec and non exec member of boards and as a trustee of a number of organisations at local, regional and national levels. I ran a successful public sector business in North Norfolk for 16 years and have excellent knowledge of business processes and accountability at board level and as CEO, including monitoring multi-million pound capital programmes and leading on marketing, promotion and PR. I have a lifelong enthusiasm for railways which in retirement keeps me busy. Since 2013 I have enjoyed volunteering on the North Norfolk Railway as a TTI, platform supervisor and guard. I joined the Society Board in 2016 as a trustee and media officer, something I find very worthwhile and rewarding. On the “Big Railway” I chair the Bittern Line Community Rail Partnership and I am a director of Community Rail Norfolk. I am married with two grown up children and live on the Broads. Besides almost all things “railway”, my interests include English traditional music and dance (I play the squeezebox for Kemps Men of Norwich), watching rugby union (especially Leicester Tigers) and Rotary.
