M&GN Society Members' Day 2011

1st October 2011

The M&GN Society held it's second annual Members' Day on the 1st October. Society members travelled free and a special train consisting of the Joint Heritage Coach Fund's Wisbech & Upwell tramcar and the LNER BYP was hauled by the J15.

The Class 31, now in it's new guise as D5631, also made an appearance. After the event, it went straight into the Carriage and Wagon works to recieve white body stripes and BR crests.

The day marked the last working of the J15. After the event it went into the loco works and will recieve a retube over the winter months and will be outshopped in LNER black in the new year. It is hoped that the boiler ticket will be extended beyond May to allow it to run some more in its centenery year.

British Sugar Supports Wissington

19th February 2011

Press Release: The British Sugar Group has donated £400 towards the restoration of a 70-years-old steam engine that was built to work at its sugar factory in Wissington, near Kings Lynn. The small but powerful industrial locomotive, appropriately named Wissington, is being restored by volunteers from the Midland & Great Northern Joint Railway Society, the supporting charity of the North Norfolk Railway, and will run on the Poppy Line when completed. Society Trustee Ian Lake is leading the project, and says: 'This generous gift will help us accelerate work on the loco, and with any luck we should have her back in service this year.' British Sugar produces over a million tonnes of sugar each year, selling under the Silver Spoon brand. It is a division of Associated British Foods plc, and the Wissington factory is one of its major plants.
