Wissington On Load Trials

26th February 2013

Our 1938 Hudswell-Clarke 0-6-0ST Wissington was out and about on the North Norfolk Railway on the 25th February undertaking loaded testing to determine the maximum weight that can be realistically hauled up the NNR's 1 in 80 gradients.

She was reported to have performed well and is now nicely run in after a summer working trains on the Mid-Suffolk Light Railway. Two round trips were made from Sheringham to Holt, with a load of two Mk.Is and a van (TSO, BCK & CCT), this weighing approximately 85 tons.

Steaming was reported to be very good, with the locomotive able to gather good momentum on level gradients and able to hold between 10 - 12mph on Kelling bank.

Wissington will be in steam during the Spring Steam Gala on the North Norfolk Railway, acting as station pilot at Sheringham. There are two weekends this year, with the first on the 8th, 9th & 10th March and the second on the 16th & 17th March. Wissington will join BR Standard 70000 Britannia and a host of other visiting locomotives including a BR Standard Class 4MT 4-6-0, Class 2 2-6-0, Black 5 45407 and GWR Large Prarie 4141, plus locomotives from the home fleet. More information can be found on the North Norfolk Railway website.

Class 31 Works in Home Fleet Gala

20th February 2013

Our 1960 built Class 31 (Brush Type Two), D5631 has been working passenger trains on the NNR, including an appearance for the Weybourne Traction Group's home fleet diesel gala on the 16th February.

Due to the NNR's DMU undergoing overhaul in Weybourne works, the opportunity has been taken to use mainline diesel locos for the NNR yellow timetable. Normally mainline diesel locomotives only work on Saturdays as midweek and Sunday turns are worked by the DMU.

D5631 has been booked to run on the 17th, 19th, 21st and 24th February. However, due to cold weather D5631 will now no longer be working these February dates as our locomotive cannot heat trains. It will be substituted with the NNR's 25057 as this loco has a steam heat boiler which keeps the carriages nice and toasty! However, D5631 is still due to work on the 3rd and 24th March. D5631 will also make an appearance for the summer diesel gala, which is held on the 14th - 16th June.

The home fleet gala and summer gala in June are organised by the Weybourne Traction Group. The group organises and promotes all NNR diesel based events. Up to date NNR diesel news is posted on the WTG's Facebook and Twitter pages:

Don't forget you can support D5631 by joining The Loco Club - we want to continue with her ongoing restoration by rebuilding the Holt-end cab. This will involve the restoration of the original headcode indicator boxes and bufferbeam valances. To join the club, please visit the 'Join' pages.

Appeal for Missing Canopy Spandrels

5th February 2013

Behind the scenes, work is progressing on the Sheringham Canopy Project, with work underway that will eventually see the reinstatement of several canopy stanchions on Platform Two at Sheringham.

This work is part of a wider plan by the North Norfolk Railway, supported by the M&GN Joint Railway Society, to restore Sheringham station to its former glory. So far this winter, the original Sheringham East Signal Box has already been moved back to the level crossing and plans are afoot to rebuild the station building on Platform Two which will provide much needed cover to passengers during inclement weather.

The original building on Platform two was demolished soon after the line through to Melton Constable closed in 1964. The first phase to reinstate the building sees the replacement of the canopy stanchions. These heavy cast iron columns take the weight of the canopy and atop of these sit decorative M&GN spandrels.

We've already restored the stanchions and several of the spandrels, however we are several spandrels short and are appealing for the donation of original spandrels to allow us to restore another unique piece of railway history for everyday use.

So you’re able to help, please get in touch with Nigel Scarlett at Sheringham Station. NR26 8RA, or email:

NNR Aerial Photographs Released

1st February 2013

We've been very lucky to be able to share some extraordinary photographs, taken on the North Norfolk Railway back in September 2012.

The aerial photographs were taken by 'AtomAir', a company specialising in Aerial photography. They really speak for themselves but show the railway in a completely different view. You can find out more about AtomAir by visiting their website,
