2013 Society Members' Day Announced

27th June 2013

The 2013 M&GN Joint Railway Society Members' day has been announced, for Saturday 5th October 2013. On this day, the North Norfolk Railway is opened up for Society members and any member is welcome to travel for free. This year marks a special anniversary for the Society and will be a day not to miss!

Saturday 5th October marks exactly 50 years to the day the ubiquitous Wandering 1500 railtour left Broad Street at exactly 9.20am, running via Finsbury Park and onto Stratford Upon Avon and return. The tour was the last time the B12 steamed until 1994 with the locomotive going into store after the trip. To mark the occasion, it is planned to have the B12 depart Sheringham station at exactly 0920 to mark 50 years of the tour and to kickstart the 2013 Members' Day.

To celebrate the trip, a railtour will also be chartered by the Railway Touring Company and will run from London Liverpool Street to Holt, traversing the Sheringham level crossing. It is anticipated the locomotive hauling the tour will be LNER B1 4-6-0 61306 Mayflower. Tickets for the tour have yet to go on sale.

As part of the day and associated celebrations, the Society is appealing for anyone who travelled on the original tour, or was a member of the footplate crew to make contact. David Butcher, a long standing Society supporter and Fireman on the original 1963 tour will be on the footplate of the B12 to mark the anniversary. The Society would specifically like to invite former footplatemen involved with the tour to come forward for an invite to join David on the day.

It is planned to have B12 8572 in steam for the day, hauling the Gresley Quad-Art set alongside the Society's Class 31 D5631.

Non-Society members are still welcome to travel on the day and normal rover ticket fares will apply. Memberships to the Society can be purchased either in advance or on the day to make advantage of the free travel offer. Joining the Society is the best way to support the North Norfolk Railway and membership benefits include quarter rate travel on normal NNR running days and four copies of our full colour journal Joint Line.

2-10-0 Boiler Gets New Firebox

24th June 2013

The boiler overhaul of the Society's War Department (WD) 2-10-0 Austerity 90775 has been marching on with good pace at the workshops of Chatham Steam Ltd in Kent.

Much of the work completed in recent weeks has focused on the outer firebox. Large sections of new plate have been constructed, replacing metal that was found to be deeply pitted and corroded. Whilst the works are extensive, this will ensure the locomotive boiler has a long life ahead of it when it returns to traffic.

The most recent photos, which can be viewed by clicking the thumbnail to the left, show the massive new section of outer firebox wrapper and firehole door under construction, along with photos of the new firebox corner sections and the whole lot being craned into position, ready to be welded in situ.

The Society has made a major commitment to overhauling WD 90775. We are always grateful of donations to support the cost of 90775's overhaul and welcome supporters to commit to joining The Loco Club. The club is an excellent way to support the Society's locomotives without breaking the bank and ensures a regular income to pay for maintenance and overhauls.

Class 31 and M&GN Bar Gala Success

22nd June 2013

The M&GN Joint Railway Society's original Norwich based Class 31 D5631 made her first gala appearance since outshopping in BR Green with white stripes. The increasingly popular Muddle and Go Nowhere bar, hosted aboard our 1937 Gresley Buffet (RB) also made a return to the rails, with real ale in plenty.

D5631 was booked out and worked on Friday 14th and Saturday 15th June, being substituted by B12 8572 on the Sunday. The 31 was joined by the home fleet, including Class 37 D6732 which was signed back into traffic at 2030 on Thursday 13th - talk about timing! Complimenting the residents were three visitors. Class 56 56311 from Washwood Heath near Birmingham, Class 45 45133 from the Midland Railway Butterley and Class 33 33108 from the Barrow Hill Roundhouse near Chesterfield arrived via Sheringham Level Crossing on Thursday 13th. They were brought to the NNR by Class 56 56311 and Class 31 D5613 (31190), but neither locomotive was booked to work passenger trains.

The event, which was organised by the Weybourne Traction Group, was the group's first big gala. The event was a success with trains well loaded, especially on the Saturday. The Muddle and Go Nowhere bar hosted two evening 'Beerex' specials on the Friday (hauled by D6732) and Saturday (hauled by 33108) nights, such was their popularity only empty bottles and casks could be found on the NNR by Sunday afternoon!

All visiting locomotives departed the NNR on Monday 17th June via Sheringham Level Crossing.

Joint Line Issue 158 Posted

11th June 2013

Issue 158 of Joint Line, the full colour journal of the M&GN Joint Railway Society, has been posted to members.

The summer 2013 edition includes the latest news update from the Chairman, the NNR General Manager, Society and NNR locomotive and Carriage & Wagon news and the usual updates from other NNR departments.

As well as photographic coverage of the March gala, this edition contains the first of a two part article by railway historian Adrian Vaughan on the Eastern and Midlands locomotives and drivers. Also included is an article from ex-South Lynn fireman Ray Bullock on how he and his depot was affected by the aftermath of the 1955 strike and in a 'first' for Joint Line there is an intriguing short story with a strong M&GN influence.

In Pictures: B12 at the G&WSR

2nd June 2013

Our B12 4-6-0 no.8572 has now returned to the North Norfolk Railway by low loader and is now back hauling trains on home metals.

The B12's visit to the Gloucestershire & Warwickshire Steam Railway (G&WSR) was the B12's first visit away to another heritage line since returning to traffic after major overhaul in March 2012. The locomotive was very well received in Gloucestershire and our volunteers were all made very welcome - so thanks to all the staff and volunteers of the G&WSR for your hospitality!

Thanks also to the many photographers who submitted photographs of the B12 during her visit to the G&WSR - a bumper album documenting the locomotive's visit can be viewed by clicking the image, left.

If you would like to find out more information on the B12, please visit the B12 page. We are always welcome to anyone willing to support the locomotive - you can do this in three ways, either by joining the Loco Club, Wandering 1500 Club or B12 "200" Club. All are great ways to help our flagship locomotive and keep her well maintained and 'on the road'.
