2013 Members' Day Update

The 2013 M&GN Joint Railway Society annual Members' Day on Saturday 5th October on the North Norfolk Railway promises to be very special day.

The event is the 50th anniversary to the day of the original Wandering 1500 railtour, which was the last time our B12 8572 (then numbered 61572) hauled a train for British Railways. To commemorate the event, we will be marking the first departure with an 9.20am departure from Sheringham (the same time the B12 left Broad Street station on the original tour) and a special Wandering 1500 Railtour will be hauled by BR 7MT 70013 Oliver Cromwell from Liverpool Street to Holt.

The day will begin with a few words at Sheringham from Society Chairman Neil Sharpe, followed by Richard Hardy and David Butcher, the original Fireman on the Wandering 1500 tour in 1963. Richard Hardy and David Butcher will then travel on footplate of the first departure, which will mark the opening of the day.

Shed tours will commence from and The William Marriott Museum will open from 10 o'clock, where a special collection of Wandering 1500 Tour memorabilia will be on display. It is anticipated that the Railtour from Liverpool Street will arrive at approximately 14.30pm.

The Muddle and Go Nowhere bar, housed inside our 1937 Gresley buffet will also be offering real ale and snacks, along with free tea and coffee. Our B12 4-6-0 8572 will be in steam, along with Class 31 D5631, which will reunite three former Norwich stablemates. Unfortunately our vintage train will not be in service this year, but will make a welcome return next year.

Tickets for the mainline tour, hauled by 70013 are still available from the Railway Touring Company website. Please note that the North Norfolk Railway nor the M&GN Joint Railway Society are not responsible for ticketing on this tour and tickets are issued by the RTC. 61036 Mayflower was originally scheduled to haul the tour, but we are informed this is no longer the case.

Please would all Society members also bring their membership cards on the day - showing your card at any NNR ticket office will enable you to redeem a complimentary rover ticket as travel is free to all Society members on the day.

First Milestone for Y14 Appeal

23rd September 2013

After only a week after launching, the Y14:2014 Appeal has raised £10,000. This equates to 10% of the total and is a significant milestone for the appeal.

The Y14:2014 appeal was launched to raise funds to overhaul J15 7564, and return her to steam with the appearance of a Great Eastern Y14 as she was built. The funds already raised will enable us to continue overhauling the locmotive, which is currently at Ian Riley's engineering workshops at Bury in Lancashire. If we can reach the £100,000 target, then the locomotive could be steamed once again by late 2014.

Y14:2014 Appeal Launched

The M&GN Joint Railway Society has launched an appeal, which will raise funds for the overhaul of the Society's Great Eastern Railway built 0-6-0.

The J15's "ticket" expired in May and the overhaul of 7564 began in July with the locomotive moving to Ian Riley's workshops in Bury, Lancashire where the engine is in the early stages of overhaul.

The Y14:2014 Appeal has been launched by Society Chairman Neil Sharpe to raise funds to allow the overhaul to be completed in good time - with sufficient funds, the locomotive could be completed by the end of 2014. If funds are not raised, then the overhaul could be much more protracted, being funded by conventional membership subscriptions and contributions from the J15 '200' Club and Loco Club.

The aim of the appeal is to return the J15 to steam, but with several important physical differences, which will give the appearance of a Great Eastern Railway Y14, looking as if she had just rolled out the factory 101 years ago at Stratford in 1912. After several years, she will be reliveried into LNER livery, with GER modifications removed for the remainder of her ticket to be spent in British Railways colours.

In order for us to achieve this and let the J15 steam for another ten years, we ask all members and supporters of our favourite little 0-6-0 to dig deep into their pockets to raise £100,000 for the overhaul.

Joint Line Issue 159 Posted

15th September 2013

The latest edition of the M&GN Joint Railway Society's quarterly magazine Joint Line has been posted to members and will be arriving in the next few days.

This edition features the usual roundup from the Society Chairman, NNR General Manager, workshops and Museum. Articles in this issue include a look back at the B12's visit to Gloucestershire earlier in the year and an 'inside' report on the 2013 diesel gala held in June. Historical articles consist of Adrian Vaughan's continuing look at locomotives and drivers in the M&GN's early years, Ray Bullock continues his candid review at the aftermath of the 1955 ASLEF strike and Chris Fisher picks up a lead from a previous article with an item on the Norwich district departmental B1 boilers.

Photographs and reports from the Steam Gala and Forties weekend will feature in the next issue.

Mid-Suffolk Members' Day Success

15th September 2013

Over 100 people turned out for Wissington's official launch ceremony and Society Members' Day at the Mid-Suffolk Light Railway at Brockford on Saturday 14th September.

The 'Middy' kindly opened their doors to M&GN Joint Society Members for the day, with Wissington in steam for all to enjoy. Wissington made many trips along the line throughout the day, pausing at 1230 for the official launch and some words of thanks from project manager Ian Lake, Wissington's, M&GNJRS Chairman Neil Sharpe, John Howard, who launched Wissington's restoration over 18 years ago and the MSLR Vice-Chairman John Stark.

In the afternoon, supporters were able to drive and ride on the footplate of the locomotive after a buffet lunch, which was kindly put on by MSLR volunteers.

The Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway Society is the supporting charity of (and major shareholder in) the North Norfolk Railway, which operates a 5¼ mile heritage railway from Sheringham to Holt.

The Society actively works to preserve, display and operate a wide range of historical artefacts which include four steam locomotives and many unique carriages and wagons.
