Wissington Update

21st April 2016

Wissington has moved on hire to the Nene Valley Railway to take part in their Small Engines Gala over this next week end (23rd/24 April), and today she under went her steam check test examination which went successfully.

Her visit will be unique opportunity for her to be seen with class mate Derek Crouch.

WD Overhaul Update

Engine now fully re-wheeled and back down ready for suspension to be reassembled. Good progress is being made with the assembly of the Ikea flat pack ash pan which is being assembled with the assistance of the arc welder.

B12 Update

1st April 2016

The crack in the bogie frame has been gouged out and welded . The bogie horn guides have been removed progressively Set up on the milling machine to have their slide faces milled true and flat once again. Once this has been completed then they can be refitted and the slots in the frames heated and jacked back to parallel.

The bogie transverse slide faces are being plated to recover the effects of years of wear and tear and to restore the slides thickness. New bronze slipper plates will be finally fitted to the bogie stretcher once the steel plating work has been completed on the centre slide block.

Both sets of bogie wheels have had their tyres turned and profiles machined.

The work to overhaul the expansion link and fit new die blocks has been presented with some challenges following the heat treatment process to re-case harden the links. Due to the exact metallurgy of the steel not being known it was not possible to harden them by the nitrating process so conventional higher temperature methods had to be used which has caused some slight distortion. This is measured in tens of thousandths of an inch, but has meant that further visits have had to be made to Bedestone Engineering Works to discuss and agree the optimum setup for the final grinding, all of which has added time to the job.

New piston rings are on order following the valve and piston exam.

Y14 Update

What a little gem she is turning into. Following last year's trials and tribulations and the fine tuning work that was carried out, she has now found herself and all the benefits of the engineering work under a ken as a part of her comprehensive overhaul are starting to pay dividends.

Her load hauling capabilities have been restored and indeed I don't think we have reached her potential yet as she has already shown to be comfortable with five coaches and a van. She is steaming like a witch and when just cracked into second valve on the regulator, romps up our 1 in 80 inclines.

Just a couple of little tasks now outstanding, namely to replace once again the piston rod gland packings as these are still not fully steam tight, and to fettle the cones into the right hand injector out to 9 mm to match the previously adjusted size of the left hand injector.

Hopefully we can sit back and just enjoy seeing her regularly at the front of service trains this year.

She us due to go off towards the middle of this month to the Nene Valley Railway for a few weeks and to feature in their small engine Gala very the weekend of the 23/24 April before returning to the MSLR for her usual summer season.

The Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway Society is the supporting charity of (and major shareholder in) the North Norfolk Railway, which operates a 5¼ mile heritage railway from Sheringham to Holt.

The Society actively works to preserve, display and operate a wide range of historical artefacts which include four steam locomotives and many unique carriages and wagons.
