Keith Ashford C.Eng. MIMechE

Chief Mechanical Engineer

I am a Chartered Mechanical Engineer, and corporate member of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers. I have over 42 years’ experience in the engineering industry, which started in the design of engineering services with the NHS. This was followed by a period as Head of Fluids Engineering in the UK with Michelin Tyre plc. For twenty years I worked at Director and Regional Director levels for a number of engineering consultancies in the Midlands area.

Since 2019, I have been employed full-time by the North Norfolk Railway as their Chief Mechanical Engineer, and involved now daily with the engineering activities within the Motive Power Depot and Engineering Workshops at Weybourne.

My involvement with the M&GNJR Society started in 1967 and during the 1970’s became one of the first firemen to be passed out. During this period I was involved in the original overhaul of the J15 and subsequently associated with the B12’s early restoration. Having come more actively involved again since 2000, I became responsible for the engineering/management of the last overhaul of the B12, followed by the conversion of the J15 to Y14 guise and then the overhaul of the WD.

I am a qualified volunteer steam driver on the NNR, and a volunteer Trustee Director of the Boiler Engineering Skills Training Trust (BESTT).

My hobbies include model engineering, with a 5” gauge Class B1 and B12 under construction. I am a qualified PADI Rescue Scuba Diver, and enjoy skiing and a various sports when I get the time.
