Y14/J15 Overhaul: Volunteers continue to make progress

The small group of footplate volunteers, led by Joe Issitt, have continued work on the Society’s Y14/J15. Their preliminary work to prepare the loco for its overhaul is being supervised by CME Keith Ashford.

Over a recent weekend the volunteers:-

·       Wire wheeled and needle gunned the coal space in the tender to remove a combination of compacted coal dust and rust.

·       Applied first coat of bitumen paint to the cleaned tender space.

A scope of works has been developed for the overhaul specifically of the boiler and for the ‘Partial/Light’ overhaul of the engine’s chassis and tender.

The locomotive is being stored within the main Running Shed until further space becomes available to start the next stage of dismantling to remove the boiler.
